October 3rd 2007.Today it’s Wednesday, Tag der Deutschen Einheit, German re-unification day, so Berlin is enjoying a mid-week day off. The wall came down back in 1989. Two East German
(so-called “Ossie”) friends remember experiences from that autumn day 18 years ago. B said it was all very odd and eerie, but they had heard the West Germans (“Wessies”) were handing out a hundred marks each to
Ossie who travelled west to Schlesiches Tor in the district of Kreuzberg. B didn’t really believe the change would be permanent, but if there was a hundred marks being given away it would be stupid not
to go. So reluctantly they went, collected the money, and were happy to get back to the east. S, on the other hand, was sure that West German women would steal their East German men. “We just thought
that West German women would be more beautiful and just … smell better than us…” she said, enjoying hearing herself tell that story yet another time perplexing another a foreigner yet again with another east-west story.
Across the street Niko’s Greek restaurant has started taking in its outside seating – just about half the tables left now to catch the intense autumn sun that might come our way. Greek restaurants
in the west were really popular after the wall came down because of the fairly meat-heavy menu. Berlinsider has a soft spot for the mixed cold starters – little portions of stuffed vine leaves, taramasalata, white beans in vinaigrette,
feta cheese, roasted peppers, sheep’s cheese with chilli and a brilliant marinated sea-food salad. Washed down with a good cold white wine. April to October is about the season for eating outside in Berlin, and
there’s food all day everyday everywhere you go, all with table service. About half a dozen people are out there enjoying their lunch right now … maybe they might be joined by one more. After all, it is a day for celebrating …
