| 1. Bernauer Strasse was the site of two escape tunnels dug beneath the Berlin Wall. The Wall ran along the pavement from bottom left to top right in the picture.
2. The regular weekend fleamarkets are a feature of the city. Here the committed collector or bargain-hunter can spend hours.
3. Chocolate santas looking slightly militaristic - "the Red Army on the march".
4. A Christmas tree in Berlin's flagship department store, the KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens). The store was opened in 1907 and is the Berlin equivalent of Harrods in London or Galeries Lafayette in Paris.

5. The East Side Gallery, a section of the Wall which runs along the northern bank of the Spree in the east of the city.
6. Cake and coffee in the KaDeWe. A challenge to any diet-conscious visitor is the traditional coffee and cake eaten in mid-afternoon.
7. The Trabant, a more recent style icon of the DDR and shown here parked up in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
8. Christmas is special in Berlin with much of the city illuminated including the broad avenue of Unter den Linden.
